As a new parent, it isn’t strange to find yourself asking “what does my baby really need for the first weeks he or she will be at home”, well the answer to that question is fairly simple, not much at all. Below you will find a baby needs checklist that you can use to help you choose all of the basic baby items, often referred to as a layette, which a baby needs in the first couple of weeks of his or her precious life.

Basic Baby Needs: Layette and Clothing

  • Five to ten rompers or onesies, it all depends on how often you really want to have to do laundry.
  • Five to seven baby nightgowns or sleepers.
  • One cold weather sleeper if found necessary.
  • Five to seven pairs of baby socks.
  • One to two newborn hats, it all depends on the climate.

Basic Baby Needs: Bath Items and Diapers

  • Two packs of diapers that are disposable or enough cloth diapers to last for two days. Keep in mind that newborns can coil up to ten diapers each day.
  • One pack of disposable wipes or ten cloth wipes.
  • A waterproof pad used for diaper changes.
  • Three to five baby washcloths.
  • One to two hooded towels, if you desire. The towels that adults use work just as good.
  • One bottle of baby wash that is gentle and sensitive.
  • Nail clippers for the baby.
  • A digital thermometer.

Basic Baby Needs: Feeding and Bedding

  • Three to four fitted sheets to be used for the cradle or crib, bassinet or co-sleeper.
  • Five to seven blankets that is lightweight.
  • One to two heavier blankets, it all depends on the climate.
  • Ten burp clothes.
  • Five to eight bottles, if you are going to be bottle feeding.
  • A breastfeeding pillow, if you are going to be breastfeeding and if desired.

Well, that’s it! Even though there are several baby products on today’s market that can really make a parent’s life a whole lot easier, most are just wants and aren’t considered needs. Even though it may be a little tempting to purchase every single gadget that’s on the shelf, you should remember that your baby is going to be just as happy with just the basic, simple items that she or he really truly needs.
