Baby Bottles for Your Baby
May 11, 2008 – 6:19 amAs a new parent, one of your major concerns is which bottle you should purchase for your infant. You probably often find yourself asking does it really matter which baby bottle I use to feed my little one, but the truth of the matter is, it often doesn’t matter. However, for some unique feeding situations, the ability to choose the perfect baby bottle can really make a huge difference.
Don’t Purchase Too Many Bottles
Purchasing dozens of one particular style of baby bottles before your baby is born is the absolute best way to ensure that your little one is going to hate that particular brand and style of baby bottle. In the beginning, babies aren’t going to have preferences that are very definite, especially about what is going in their mouth. In a situation where you think that you would like to only use a certain type or brand of bottle, you can purchase one or maybe two in the beginning and just see how your infant is going to respond. Later on down the road, you can always purchase more bottles, or if the baby isn’t satisfied with the initial choices you have made, you can try out some new brands and styles.
The Shape of the Nipple Is Important
As a new parent, if you are planning to only feed your baby formula, the shape of the nipple on the bottle isn’t going to be all that important, that is as long as your baby will happily eat from that nipple. In a situation where you are breastfeeding your baby but you are occasionally using a bottle, you might want to consider purchasing bottles that have nipples that are wide based which will closely resemble a mother’s breast more. There are some babies out there that really have a hard time when switching from a wide latch of breastfeeding to a bottle nipple that is narrow.
The Flow Rate Matters
Based on the brand nipple you are using, the speed that the breast milk or formula travels through the nipple varies a great deal, and there are some brands out there that are even selling nipples that have been designed for a slow or fast flow. Most babies that are newborns are going to need a nipple that has a slower flow in the beginning, so that they aren’t forced to gulp down all of their dinner. For tiny babies, a flow rate that is too fast can cause tummy troubles. However, there are some infants that may not really like the slowest flowing newborn nipples, so as a parent; you may have to doing a little experimenting in order to find the perfect nipple for your little bundle of joy.
